Testing… Testing

August 11, 2017

The  United States educational system uses the Common Core Initiative  as a detailed method to measure  what K-12 students should know in English Language Arts and Mathematics at the end of each grade. Students’ knowledge and performance are assessed through standardized tests.

Teachers and students spend the school year focusing  on achieving a good result on the standardized test. Teachers teach to the test. The actual debate is over the validity of this kind of assessment.

Educators don’t trust the efficiency and accuracy of the results. They claim it does not determine the students’ knowledge, intelligence and capacity to move forward.

It’s clear that in 1983 when  Howard Gardner established his Theory of Multiple Intelligences, the traditional way of assessing students proficiency was archaic and counter productive.
